District 1 School Board Member Dr. Steve Gallon III saluted the award-winning Viking Freedom Writers of Miami Norland Senior High School and the Florida Freedom Writers who have inspired countless young people to choose creative writing and spoken word to express their feelings. The Viking Freedom Writers and Florida Freedom Writers were joined by Miami Norland Principal Reginald Lee and their teacher Precious Symonette.

Dr. Gallon honored them with a proclamation and shared their stories of trials and triumph. The audience was enamored by their poem “Stand Up” as their voices filled the room with their stories, experiences, and expressions. The response was a standing ovation by everyone present.
